In a surprising turn of events, the purchaser of a highly coveted multimillion-dollar case of hockey cards has expressed a change of heart regarding his 3.72-million-dollar acquisition.

Reports from CBC have verified that Jack Arshawsky, a real estate agent based in Ontario, emerged victorious in an auction for a case containing thousands of unopened 1979-1980 O-Pee-Chee brand hockey cards, including the renowned rookie card of Wayne Gretzky, for a staggering $3.72 million US.

However, Arshawsky has revealed that he has yet to complete the full payment for the cards, thus they remain securely held within the auction house's facilities.

Discovered in the attic of a family in Saskatchewan, the box of unopened hockey cards garnered significant attention, with estimations suggesting it may harbor as many as 25 to 27 Gretzky rookie cards, each holding considerable individual value.

Arshawsky recounted the intense bidding process, which extended into the early hours, fueled by his consumption of four Red Bull energy drinks to maintain focus and competitiveness.

Despite initially being drawn to the auction due to his ownership of one of Gretzky's rookie cards, Arshawsky has since voiced doubts about his passion for card collecting.

In an unexpected twist, he has reached out to various figures, including Canadian rapper Drake, NHL team owners, and even Gretzky's family, exploring the possibility of transferring ownership of the cards. He has even considered gifting them to a childhood acquaintance.

Arshawsky's sentiments shifted notably after learning of the disappointment felt by the runner-up bidder, prompting him to reconsider his ownership of the cards and seek a more fitting custodian.

While Arshawsky has paid $3 million towards the purchase, $720,000 remains outstanding. He advocates for the cards' continued safekeeping in the auction house's vault until their final destination is determined.

While legal implications loom over the unresolved transaction, Heritage Auctions allegedly has affirmed their commitment to facilitating a resolution, emphasizing their reluctance to re-auction the item and the importance of fulfilling contractual obligations.
